Assignments

An assignment in defenderData is a form initiated by court staff or OPD assigning a case to a firm.

Below is an example of a completed assignment.

The features of an assignment are as follows:

  • C.O.A. Case No.: The Court of Appeals case number, including the roman numeral suffix
  • SCOMIS No.: The SCOMIS number. May be input instead of the Odyssey number, or with the Odyssey number
  • Odyssey No.: The Odyssey number. My by input instead of the SCOMIS number, or with the SCOMIS number
  • Trial Case Type: The case type of the case being appealed. Available options are 71.09 (Sexually Violent Predator cases) Criminal (SCOMIS Type 1), Dependency (SCOMIS Type 7), Termination (SCOMIS Type 7), Juvenile Offender (SCOMIS Type 8), and Other (SCOMIS Type 6, and Type 2 except for Sexually Violent Predator cases)
  • Appeal Type: The type of appeal. Available options are Accelerated Review (includes dependency and termination direct appeals under RAP 18.13A), Postconviction DNA Test Motion, Notice of Discretionary Review, Notice of Appeal, Petition for Review (Supreme Court only), Personal Restraint Petition, and Post-Sentence Review.
  • Division: The Court of Appeals Division assigning the case.
  • County: The case's county of origin
  • Notice Date: The date the Notice of Appeal, Notice of Discretionary Review, or other initiating pleading was filed
  • Case Caption: The case caption in ACORDS
  • Firm Name: The firm selected for the assignment
  • Supervisor: The firm's supervisor
  • WSBA Bar No.: The bar number of the firm's supervisor
  • Created By: The user that created the assignment
  • Create Date: The date the assignment was created

Dependency and Termination Assignment Fields

When Dependency or Termination are selected as the Trial Case Type, the Client Information fields appear in the upper right section of the assignment form.

  • Client Type: Options are Child, Father, Guardian, Mother, or Other
  • First Name: Client's first name (no middle name)
  • Last Name: Client's last name

The Client Information fields permit different attorneys to be assigned to different clients under the same Court of Appeals case number. They also help the appellate attorney learn their client's name, which is confidential in state databases and can be difficult to access.

Consolidated and Linked Cases

If cases are consolidated or linked in ACORDS, the Consolidated/Linked box in the upper right hand of the assignment form should be checked. This will add the Consolidated/Linked Information fields to the assignment form.

The fields should be entered as follows:

  • C/L COA Case No.: Enter all consolidated or linked Court of Appeals case numbers, separated by semicolons
  • C/L COA SCOMIS No.: Enter all consolidated or linked SCOMIS case numbers, separated by semicolons. Can be entered instead of Odyssey numbers, or in addition Odyssey numbers below.
  • C/L COA Odsyssey No.: Enter all consolidated or linked Odyssey case numbers, separated by semicolons. Can be entered instead of SCOMIS numbers, or in addition to SCOMIS numbers above.
